AN SERIAL JURYSI

(By R. Vaughan-Fowler).

To tell the story of pioneer aerial survey which started

from Canten on sunday it is necessary to go back to the time

when the Southern China air routes were first seriously dis-

sussed by representatives fœm Canton and Bacao and myself.

One of the biggest of many difficulties than was the absanoe

of reliable maps, there being no information regarding the

nature of the country To obtain this by sending representa-

tives on land sours was out of the question and General Cheung

hai-chaung, Chief of the Aviation Bureau of anton, set out to

tackle the problem of serial survey against immenes oddm.

In ten months, however, he has brought his preliminary plans

to a successful sonelusion by the start on Sunday of the Hyan

monoplane on a flight to Hankow.

The object of the flight is not only to reach Hankow non-stop

from Canton, but to investigate the possibilities of the air

lines that must eventually materialies from auton to the North.

Althou-h shorter, it is comparable with that of Sir Alan bham

round afrion, and its importance to China is enormons, in fact

it is really the start of real comeroial aviation in China.

Leader and Pilot.

The organiser, leader and principal pilot of the flight is

General Cheung Val-cheang. He is a pilot of many years exper-

ience having leamt to fly at the Curtiss Field in America early

in 1916. Sines that date, he has been actively employed in

connexion with Chinese aviation. From time to time he has been

engaged in aerial warfare in different parts of China, the most
